In the "Welt der Wunder" magazine, issue 8/24, one of my photos of the Blakiston's fish owl was featured
Did you know that the Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni) is one of the rarest owls in the world?
In the latest issue (8/24) of the German popular science magazine "Welt der Wunder” (en: World of Wonders) there is an article about this impressive bird species. I am particularly proud that one of my photos, showing the Blakiston's fish owl in frontal flight, was prominently featured in this article.
The Creation of the Photo
The Blakiston's Fish Owl
The article titled "The Quirky Giant" appeared in the section "What Really Matters" and focuses on the Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni). This owl is a rare species that only inhabits small regions of Asia. It is estimated that there are only between 1,000 and 2,500 individuals left in the world, which classifies it as "endangered" on the Red List of Threatened Species. The loss of their natural habitat, consisting of old forests and nearby water bodies, threatens their survival, as they primarily feed on fish.
The Story Behind the Picture
The photo used for the article was taken during one of my travels through Hokkaido, Japan. It captures the Blakiston's fish owl in frontal flight with a freshly caught fish in its beak. This image is one of my personal favorites, and I am thrilled that it is now reaching a larger audience.
Raising Awareness for Endangered Species
The publication of the photo in a well-known magazine in Germany like "Welt der Wunder” (World of Wonders) not only brings recognition to my work as a photographer but also draws attention to species that are not widely known. Without conservation efforts, these animals will soon only be found in history books. Many species are not well known to the public, have few advocates, and therefore receive little attention. Articles like this can help raise awareness about the protection of endangered species.
