Update, September 15, 2026: The Sony FE 600mm f6.3 GM OSS is official too
Sony announced the new super-telephoto prime on September 15, 2026: the FE 600mm f6.3 GM OSS, model number SEL600F63GM. The main rumors were right.
The lens weighs 995 grams without the tripod collar and measures 108 × 263 mm. So Sony does stay just under the one-kilogram mark. The price is $3,699.99, a little below the $3,800 that had been circulating, and it ships from late September 2026.
Like the 400mm, the 600mm runs two XD Linear Motors and optical image stabilization. On the Alpha 9 III you get up to 120 frames per second, with autofocus and exposure keeping up through the burst. Both teleconverters fit: the 1.4x TC turns it into 840mm at f9, and the 2x TC into 1,200mm at f13.
Weight, dimensions, maximum aperture and the G Master classification all held up.
Update, September 13, 2026: For the Sony FE 600 mm f6.3 GM OSS, SonyAlphaRumors now points to September 15, 2026 as a possible unveiling date, though Sony has not confirmed that date.
Update, September 9, 2026: Some of the rumors have been confirmed.
With the Sony FE 8–14 mm f3.5 Fisheye G, one of the lenses named in the same round of rumors has since been officially unveiled. That confirms at least some of the information that had been circulating. In that release, however, there was still no mention or announcement of the Sony 600 mm f6.3 GM OSS.
The super-telephoto is not written off yet. Earlier rumors had floated a possible unveiling in the second half of September. So hope springs eternal. An official announcement within the remaining weeks of September would still be possible.

For weeks, rumors with specific figures have been circulating about a new Sony FE 600 mm f6.3 GM OSS prime lens: 995 grams, around €4,200, and supposedly a launch in the first half of September. The problem: Sony itself has not confirmed any of it.
The rumor mill around new Sony super-telephoto lenses has been running at full speed in recent weeks. Two lenses in particular are drawing attention: a 400 mm f4.5 GM OSS and, supposedly, a Sony FE 600 mm f6.3 GM OSS.
What specs are currently circulating for the Sony 600 mm f6.3?
It appears that after a post about these lenses in the FredMiranda forum, several rumor sites picked up the supposed technical data in early September. Photo Rumors lists, among other things, the following for the 600:

SonyAlphaRumors followed up with a supposed price of around €4,200 in Europe.
The 995 grams in particular would be remarkable. For comparison:
Nikon’s Z 600 mm f6.3 VR S weighs 1,390 grams without the tripod collar.
A nearly identical weight of 994 g has been attributed to the 400 mm f4.5 GM prime. That weight figure is not far-fetched. Will Sony set a new record here, should the 600 mm lens in question actually appear?
For now, 995 grams is just a number from a leak. In my view, this information is not entirely credible. But there are always surprises.
When is the Sony 600 mm f6.3 supposed to be announced?
Citing a trusted source, SonyAlphaRumors reported that Sony will present the new lenses on the afternoon of September 8. Pre-orders are also expected to open at that time.
That sounds specific at first.
However, as of the morning of September 8, there is no official announcement from Sony.
No product page, no press release, and no technical data. So far, Sony has not confirmed any of the rumors about the 600 mm f6.3 GM OSS. Which the camera company would never do anyway. Still, by the time Sony’s announcement email for a new product presentation lands in your inbox, you know the odds are very high that the rumors that have been building for weeks will turn out to be true.
Do the leaks come from different independent sources?
Just because there are several reports does not mean there are several independent sources.
The leaks about weight, dimensions, and price essentially trace back to the same original source and were then picked up by other websites. Photo Rumors, for example, explicitly names FredMiranda as its source.
That does not mean the figures are automatically wrong. But it does mean that several websites using the same data source cannot be weighted like several sources that are independent of one another.
And what if nothing comes on September 8, 2026?
Then it would be a good example of how quickly an interesting rumor can turn into supposedly firm product data in the photo community. But a little camera-gear philosophy is fun too, isn’t it?
A light 600 mm f6.3 would surely be an interesting lens in Sony’s E-mount system for more than a few people. For wildlife photographers who travel a lot or mostly shoot in the mountains, a 600 weighing around one kilogram would be a relief in the truest sense of the word.
But as long as Sony itself announces nothing, this lens exists only as a rumor.
